Email Announcements
for SWE-GGS Members - Click here
1. LIST PURPOSE
Membership in the swe-ggs emailing list is intended for members and friends
of SWE -Golden Gate Section and engineers and student engineers in the
SF Bay Area interested in being informed about upcoming Golden Gate Section
news and events. The list exists to facilitate the exchange of news, announcements
and information relevant to Bay Area engineers. This is a local "information
only" list, not a discussion list or a national news list. For information
on other lists of interest, please see the end of this page.
2. ADMINISTRATIVE REQUESTS
How do I join the swe-ggs mailing list?
Send an email to listmanager@swe.org.
The e-mail should have a blank subject line and must have only the following
in the body of the e-mail:
subscribe swe-ggs {subscribername}
where {subscribername} is your name (for example, Jane Doe), written
without the curly brackets
Note that regardless of the subscriber name you enter, you will ONLY
BE SUBSCRIBED FOR THE E-MAIL ADDRESS THAT THE MESSAGE COMES FROM. It is
therefore very important to send the message from the email account at
which you wish to be able to receive (and send) list postings. The previous
email software allowed you to specify any e-mail address as part of the
subscribe command; The new software does not support this to reduce the
likelihood that SPAMMERs will subscribe and post unwanted messages to
the list.
How do I get myself removed from the swe-ggs mailing list?
Getting yourself removed from a SWE mailing list is called unsubscribing.
As you did when you subscribed, send an e-mail message with a blank subject
line to listmanager@swe.org.
In order to unsubscribe successfully, you MUST send this e-mail from the
same account that you used when you subscribed to the list. The e-mail
must have only the following in the body of the e-mail: unsubscribe swe-ggs
The list serv software will send you an e-mail confirming a successful
unsubscribe.
3. POSTING MESSAGES TO THE LIST
To post to the list, send your message to SWE-GGS@SWE.ORG
Only subscribed list members are allowed to post messages to the list,
and they may only post these messages from the email accounts under which
they subscribe.
Only postings that contain news, queries, information or announcements
of interest to Bay Area engineers are appropriate. If you have any questions
about the appropriateness of a posting for the swe-ggs list, send it to
the moderator at listadmin.swe-ggs@societyofwomenengineers.org,
along with whatever questions you might have.
Please remember to sign your e-mail messages and list your e-mail address
at the end of the message so list readers can easily respond to your message.
Note also that Microsoft Outlook provides a feature that allows you to
specify the email address to which any "Reply To" messages are routed
to (if this needs to be different than the email account from which you
sent the message).
4. POSSIBLE PROBLEMS
- None of my posts to the list show up. What's wrong?
Chances are good that you are posting from an address that is different
from the one you used to subscribe. If you need to confirm the email address
you are subscribed under, send a message to listadmin.swe-ggs@societyofwomenengineers.org
asking for confirmation of your subscription identity. Remember to provide
the best way to contact you for a response.
- Some of my posts to the list don't show up. Why not?
Most likely because you are using administrative command words near the
beginning of the email, and the software is interpreting these as commands,
so the post bounces to the listowner for approval. The list owner is not
always able to respond to these bounces promptly. A suggestion if you
must use an administrative word (such as help, subscribe, unsubscribe,
etc.) is to creatively misspell it, like so: h3lp, or uns*b.
- I am getting "message undeliverable" emails back from some of the
recipients. What do I do?
On occasion you may post a message to the list and get back a message
saying the e-mail could not be delivered to a specific individual. This
is a bounced message and typically happens when a subscriber changes her
e-mail address but forgets to unsubscribe from the list. If this happens,
simply forward the bounced e-mail to the list owner at listadmin.swe-ggs@societyofwomenengineers.org.
The list owner can then remove the problem e-mail address from the subscription
list.
- I tried to remove myself from a mailing list and got a message with
the subject line "Unsuccessful Unsubscribe".
This message means the software was unable to match the e-mail address
you sent your unsubscribe request from to an e-mail address existing in
the list. This can occur for several reasons. First, you may have originally
subscribed from one e-mail address but attempted to unsubscribe from another
-- for example, if you originally subscribed from your company e-mail
but tried to unsubscribe by sending an e-mail from a personal account.
In this instance you will want to reattempt your unsubscribe command from
your other e-mail account. A second reason may be because you originally
subscribed using an alias or an e-mail account to which you know longer
have access. If this second scenario is the case, send an e-mail to listadmin.swe-ggs@societyofwomenengineers.org
requesting that you be unsubscribed and specifying the e-mail address
that is to be removed.
5. OTHER LISTS, ADDITIONAL HELP
Check out the National SWE website for other email lists regarding SWE
activities.
http://www.swe.org
- How do I get additional help as a list user?
1) Send a message to listmanager@swe.org. In the body of the message type
only the word "help" without quotation marks to receive a return e-mail
with a short summary of commands and procedures.
2) Contact listadmin.swe-ggs@societyofwomenengineers.org. This mail will
go to a real person who is the current owner/manager of the swe-ggs list.
This person can tell you more about the purpose of the list as well as
assist you with basic list commands.
3) If you do not receive a response from the list owner, send an e-mail
to listadmin@swe.org.
