Society of Women Engineers!
Who we are
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a non-profit, educational service organization, founded in 1949-1950, of women and men graduate engineers and those with equivalent engineering experience, dedicated to the advancement of women in the engineering profession.
The Society of Women Engineers is divided into ten regions, Region A through Region J. Region A (also known as the Golden West Region) includes Northern California, Northern Nevada, Hawaii, Guam and Saipan. Within Region A are six Sections. We are the Golden Gate Section of the Golden West Region (Region A). Section A Section B Section C Section D Section E Section F Section G Section H Section I Section J
The Society of Women Engineers Golden Gate Section (SWE-GGS), includes members from the East Bay, San Francisco, Upper Peninsula and North Bay areas. Our members reflect a diverse range of engineering and technical disciplines. The SWE Golden Gate section also interacts with student SWE sections at San Francisco State University and U.C. Berkeley. Students from Santa Rosa Community College are represented as a special interest group within our section.

What we do
  • Professional Development
Professional development of our members is supported in a number of different ways. At the section level, we host one professional development workshop each year with a variety of topics. Recent workshops have been "Exercising Influence" and "Burnout to Balance." Additionally, Golden Gate Section members can take advantage of development seminars offered at the regional and national conferences.

  • Scholarships and Awards
The Golden Gate Section awards scholarships to entering and reentering engineering students. Scholarship funds are derived from an annual fund drive, corporate sponsors and an annual T-shirt and Silent Auction. The auction is usually held in the Spring of each year. Pictures from last year's scholarship banquet can be seen here.

  • Career Guidance
The Golden Gate Section has an active Career Guidance program. We serve as guest speakers at elementary, junior high, and high schools around the Bay Area. In 2000, GGS forged a partnership with Learning For Life, participating in its Speakers Bureau.
  • Inter-Society Activities.
The Golden Gate Section actively participates in activities with other engineering and professional societies, joint meetings with other engineering societies and an annual meeting with LEAADD, a gathering of women's professional organizations.
