Committee Chair Descriptions

Fund Development Chair

The FDC Chair recruits committee members and manages the committee, reports monthly to the Executive Council, and interfaces with other committees as required. She will also perform the same tasks as the FDC Members as appropriate.

 

Scholarship Committee Chair

SWE-SCV provides $1000 scholarships to qualified women high school graduates, college undergraduates, graduates, and re-entry students pursuing a degree in engineering. The Scholarship Chair’s responsibilities [with estimate of time commitment] include:

  • Collecting documentation of previous year’s recipients [~3-5 hours]
  • Establishing the application and judging criteria (by September) [~2-5 hours]
  • Organizing and serving on the judging panel (March/April) [~4-7 hours]
  • Notify applicants of results (April) [~1-2 hours]
  • Organizing the scholarship banquet (May/June) [~5-10 hours]
  • Advertise scholarships via e-mail and letters to high schools and universities (October – March) [10-12 hours]

 

Designing Women Committee Chair

Designing Women (DW) is an annual one-day event, typically held in January, where middle school girls are exposed to several different fields of engineering through fun hands-on activities such as building electronic circuits, paper rockets, etc. The DW Chair organizes the event. Her responsibilities [and estimate of time commitment] include:

  • Finding venue [~2-5 hours]
  • Participating in the Sally Ride Festival to advertise the event (September) [~8-12 hours]
  • Coordinating participant registration, volunteers and DW activities/workshops (December/January) [~8-10 hours]

 

Discover-E Committee Chair

Discover-E is a week-long program where volunteers sign up with the Silicon Valley Engineering Council to visit a local classroom and talk about engineering with students. The chair informs members of Discover-E opportunities as well as provides workshop ideas and materials.

 

WOW! That’s Engineering! Committee Chair

Like DW, WOW! is a one-day event for high school girls. Commitments are the same for WOW! as they are for DW.

 

GetSET Fund Development Coordinator

Manages funds, sponsorships, and donations for the GetSET program.

 

GetSET Volunteer Coordinator

Coordinate and schedule workshop requirements with science, and technology workshop leaders and volunteers. Also coordinate volunteers for college field trips and company tours. She will also coordinate and distribute workshop materials with workshop leaders.

 

GetSET Logistics Coordinator

Coordinate and schedule event with hosting university, including procuring room and board for all attendees and counsellors, reserving locations for special events during summer week, and notification of workshop schedule/requirements. Coordinate with Director of Volunteers to ensure workshop needs are understood and met.

 

Member Program Committee Chair

The purpose of the Programs committee is to offer section members exposure to topics and activities that will provide opportunities for personal improvement. The organized events also give the membership an opportunity to network with one another and to build relationships and support among the membership. Typical activities include speakers on technical, interpersonal, health, current issues, financial, and legal subjects; technical, historical or community tours; joint meetings with engineering societies, student groups, and professional women’s organizations; seminars or workshops on technical or self-improvement topics or family issues. This committee reports to the Vice President -Member Services.

 

Newsletter Chair

Assembles and creates a quarterly newsletter sent out to members and corporate sponsors. The newsletter chair may write some of the articles, but will request specific articles from individual officers (ie: VP of Members Services, Community Outreach, etc.)

 

Gatekeeper

The gatekeeper is in charge of the SWE SCV website as well as gatekeeper email alias. This chair updates the website, makes necessary changes, and corresponds with our Region A webmaster.

 

Science Fairs Committee Chair

The purpose of the Science Fairs Committee Chair is to serve as a primary point of contact for local science fair organizers. The committee chair is responsible for recruiting judges, attending and judging at local science fairs as required and reports to the Vice President -Community Outreach.

 

Nominating Committee Chair

The purpose of the nominating committee is to perform all functions related to the election of officers for the Santa Clara Valley Section. This committee reports to the President.

Committee Chair Responsibilities

  • Oversee and delegate committee tasks
  • Call meetings as required
  • Serve as liaison to Executive Council, Newsletter Editor, and Section
  • Ensure timely mailing of ballots to Section members. Designate Tellers Committee to count ballots.

 

Tellers Committee

The purpose of the Tellers Committee is to collect and tally the SWE-SCV election ballots and to report the voting results. This committee reports to the President.

Committee Member Responsibilities

  • Have SWE-SCV members send completed ballots to Tellers Committee Chair’s address
  • Collect and tally valid ballots
  • Report voting results to Executive Council
